A: A surgical abortion is a procedure in which a physician uses one of these techniques to remove pregnancy tissue from the uterus:
-
Vacuum aspiration
-
Dilation and curettage (D&C)
-
Dilation and evacuation (D&E)
-
A: Vacuum aspiration or suction aspiration is a safe, common, and quick—it normally takes 5 to 20 minutes--surgical procedure in which gentle suction is used to remove the contents of the uterus.
A: Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a brief surgical procedure in which a physician widens (dilates) the cervix and uses a straw-shaped instrument called a curette and/or suction to remove the lining of the uterus.
A. Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) is a, safe, common procedure primarily used for second trimester abortions. In a D&E, the physician dilates the cervix than uses suction and surgical instruments to clear the uterine contents. The procedure normally takes less than 30 minutes.
A: Yes, surgical abortions are among the safest medical procedures performed in the United States. The rates of serious complications related to surgical abortions is well below 1%.

We provide outpatient surgical abortions to patients who are 5 weeks to 16 weeks and 6 days pregnant.

What to Expect at the Clinic
When you arrive for your appointment, you will be asked to complete a medical history form. We will then perform an ultrasound exam to view the status of your pregnancy and draw a small blood sample to check for anemia and to determine if you are Rh-positive or negative.

When the tests are complete you will meet with a patient educator who will discuss your options and answer any questions you may have in a confidential and non-judgmental atmosphere. When the session ends you will have a private consultation with a physician who will outline the potential risks and complications associated with both abortion and continuing your pregnancy.

At this point and at total discretion of the physician you may be offered the option of having your abortion that day. You may choose to proceed or to schedule a second appointment for your procedure. In many cases, second trimester patients need additional medications before surgery and will be scheduled for a second appointment.

Whether your procedure is performed during your first visit or at a second appointment the process is the same. We will discuss the surgical technique the physician will use, support you throughout the procedure, and monitor you in the recovery room afterward. In most cases the entire process will take three to four hours.
Shortly before the procedure begins the physician will administer medication to manage pain and anxiety.

While the surgical method our physicians utilize is a simple medical procedure that typically takes 5 to 20 minutes depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy, you can expect to be in the clinic for about 2 hours.
In the first trimester, through 13.6 weeks of pregnancy, our physicians use the dilation and curettage (D&C) with vacuum aspiration technique. During the second trimester, dilation and evacuation (D&E), a combination of vacuum aspiration and instruments, is used. Both procedures are extremely safe and effective.
You will receive both detailed information about what to expect following your abortion as well as instructions for aftercare before you leave the clinic. Here is a summary:
-
Your body will go through changes due to a dramatic drop in the hormones of pregnancy, but you should begin to feel normal within 24–48 hours after the procedure.
-
Any nausea, vomiting, or fatigue you may experience should go away within 24 hours.
-
You may feel bloated for a few days.
-
Feel free to eat whatever you want, but don’t overdo it if you have experienced nausea and vomiting.
-
You can return to work or school as soon as you feel able, often the next day.
-
We can provide a medical excuse for absences from school or work for the first 3 days after your abortion.
-
Most women will have a period within 4–6 weeks of their procedure.
-
Please be aware that if you are not using birth control, you may become pregnant again before your next period begins.
