Basic facts about medication abortion

  • In a medication abortion, a person takes two sets of pills. The first pill is mifepristone which blocks the hormones that allow a pregnancy to develop. Twenty-four to 48 hour later the individual takes a second set of pills called misoprostol which  cause the uterus to contract to expel the pregnancy. The abortion normally occurs within 4 to 24 hours of taking misoprostol.

  • After taking Misoprostol, you may experience cramping and bleeding within two to four hours. You may feel like you are having a very crampy period with heavy bleeding or an early miscarriage. Most women will expel the pregnancy in 24 hours although in some cases it may take up to 48. The cramping and bleeding may be accompanied by chills, nausea, and fever, which are side effects of misoprostol. We will give you prescriptions to manage any pain or nausea you may experience.

Remember, we are here to support you, so do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions or concerns during as the abortion proceeds.

You may feel tired for one to two days after taking misoprostol, but you should be able to go back to work and resume normal activities after the bleeding and cramping have stopped. Bleeding or spotting lasts an average of 9 to16 days but may continue for up to 30 days.

    • After taking misoprostol, you experienced significant bleeding and cramping as heavy or heavier than your period that may include clots and tissue.

    • Your pregnancy symptoms, including nausea, fatigue, breast tenderness, and food aversions should begin to fade in a few days.

    • A pregnancy test taken four weeks after treatment is negative.
